A Polarization-Independent Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulator

چکیده
We report our recent experimental results on a new polarization-independent, liquid crystal (LC) spatial light modulator (SLM). Based on a periodic nematic director profile, the modulator acts as a switchable diffraction grating with only 0and ±1st-orders at efficiencies of ≥ 99%, manifests contrast ratios ∼600:1 (for laser light), switching times of ∼ 2ms, and threshold voltages of < 1V/μm. Results of modulating broadband, unpolarized light from light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) indicates that contrast ratios are ∼100:1 so far. Note that incoherent scattering for visible light is very low, and that samples are typically completely defect-free over large areas. An important feature of this diffractive polarization-independent SLM compared to its predecessors is its potential to achieve much larger diffraction angles, which enables a larger aperture (and étendue). In addition to describing the fabrication and characteristics of this SLM in general, we report on our initial progress in implementing a projection display system. All of the surprising and useful results from this grating arise from its continuous nematic director, which is most properly classed as a switchable polarization grating (PG). The SLM described here offers the inherent advantages polarization-independence at the pixel-level and fairly fast switching with nematic LCs, while maintaining similar switching voltages, cell thickness, contrast ratios, and materials.

Demonstration of polarization-insensitive spatial light modulation using a single polarization-sensitive spatial light modulator
We present a simple configuration incorporating a single polarization-sensitive phase-only liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LC-SLM) to facilitate polarization-insensitive spatial light modulation. The polarization-insensitive configuration is formed by a polarization beam splitter (PBS), a polarization-sensitive phase-only LC-SLM, a half-wave plate (HWP), and a mirror in a loop structure...
متن کاملOptimization of the spatial light modulation with twisted nematic liquid crystals by a genetic algorithm.
An optimization technique determining the configuration of optical components in a spatial light modulator is proposed. We study a spatial light modulator composed of a twisted nematic liquid crystal, a polarization state generator, and a polarization state detector. To obtain the desired phase and amplitude modulations, four parameters of the polarization state generator and detector should be...

Real-time optical image subtraction and edge enhancement using ferroelectric liquid-crystal devices based on speckle modulation.
We carried out real-time optical image subtraction and edge enhancement based on a speckle modulation technique by using ferroelectric liquid-crystal polarization switches and a ferroelectric liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. A ferroelectric liquid-crystal spatial light modulator is employed as a real-time and multiple-exposure optical device, and successful results are obtained from thre...
متن کاملPolarization rotator using a hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal cell.
Using both direct mathematical analysis and numerical modeling based on the predictions by Jones [1] it is shown that if the director in a liquid crystal cell is in a plane which lies at 45 degrees to the incident polarization, then, for normally incident light, the transmission signal which conserves polarization will always have a phase difference of pi/2 from the transmission signal of the o...
